Roses in the sunshine may not have the tender delicacy they show in overcast, soft lighting, but they practically sing their joy in bright light. To me, anyway.
Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more intriguing shadows and Scenic Sunday, and Today’s Flowers for great photos. If you’re here from another link, you might want to click on Sara’s Fave Photos above to see if there’s an even more current photo. And you might try the “rose” tag while you’re here. There are a quite a few rose photos, I promise!

These are from my Peace rosebush a few weeks ago. There are still blooms out there, but not in the full heady flush you get in July. Enjoy their vision of perfection.

It’s been awhile since I showed you a display from the Pike Place Market in Seattle. This slice of flower heaven is an ever-changing spectacle of florabundance. I try to go every few weeks, and every time I am agog at the magnificent displays. Hope you like this recent one.

Here’s a new flower, to me at least. When I was at the Volunteer Park Conservatory event last week, the head gardener, talented David Helgeson, showed me this unusual flower called Throatwort (trachelium caeruleum). I think it’s beautiful. That’s a maidenhair fern on the left, and coleus on the right. By the way, I totally love using google images for plant identification and info.

I was browsing through my archives trying to create a slideshow of flowers for the garden club I belong to and found this image. Neat, isn’t it? But I have no idea what it’s called. Anyone?

When we went shopping for roses last summer for the new bed, this one had no name but I could see it was pink and fragrant. Sold! Anyone know the name?

This lovely lily is probably a ‘Stargazer’ lily, rubrum speciosa, taken on that Federal Way Symphony Garden Tour yesterday. I understand that all lilies like this used to point downwards, and growers managed to develop one whose blooms pointed upwards, thus “star gazer.” Great name, no?

An abundant armful of orange lily flowers from my visit to Seattle’s Pike Place Market the other day. I love that I can go there, and with my little camera, have a bouquet for free! I do try to buy some now and then to support the vendors who work so hard for so little money.
Today I am honored to be Guest Friend on Today’s Flowers. Take a look at all the other flower photos people have submitted. You’ll find much beauty and talent. Took this yesterday in the brilliant sunshine we had so briefly. It’s the flower border we put in two summers ago. Not too bad for just getting established. I’m trying to use fewer and fewer annuals so it will just do its thing, but of course there must be flowers continuously spring through fall, if at all possible. I’m working on it. The veggie beds are to the right.

Yesterday the sun peeked out for a bit and the flowerbed near our patio is at its peak, so here’s a photo for you to enjoy. The pink ones in front are Sweet Williams, a perennial, the blue ones are bachelor buttons which reseeded themselves, the spiky red stuff in back is penstemon, the magenta on silver in back is rose campion, the soft pink in back is astilbe, and the white on the left is a volunteer feverfew, great for bouquets. This is not in my yard; they’re not quite ready yet at my place. But that same Wallingford garden a couple of shots down seems to be a bit earlier with what’s blooming. And I don’t see any black spot on the leaves, either.
All this rain has been tough on my roses, but the day or so of lovely sunshine coming up tomorrow may get them going. As soon as they look good, I promise some nice photos for you.

Did you know that rhododendron means red roots? Actually, when I was digging near an old one in my garden, I noticed that the roots were bright yellow, but they did have a reddish coating on them.
These perfect rhodies are from a big garden I saw few weeks ago, and it feels like the sunshine has not been here since then, either. But I digress. I just don’t get tired of flowers, and I hope you don’t, either.

These tulips at Pike Place Market are all ready to present as a gift, wrapped and ready. I love how the clear wrapping softens the light on them.
